A tomato is a fruit from a tomato plant known scientifically as Lycopersicon esculentum.

It belongs to the botanical family called Solanaceae. Tomatoes have a brightly colored outer coating and are often round in shape but may vary in both in shape and size.

They have a thick fleshy inner part. Surrounding the small seeds of tomatoes is a watery matrix that gives it the juicy taste.
